Thanks for stopping by!
This project is a natural extension of my earlier series, 100 Paintings of Oakland, which I started during the pandemic. I’d love to give a shout out to those who supported that project, wonderful folks passionate about both art and our beloved ‘town.’
With 100 Paintings of San Francisco, I’ve crossed the bridge and have found the process of painting ‘the city’ to be consistently and similarly rewarding. I am not only inspired by San Francisco’s iconic landmarks, recognizable restaurants and storefronts, but also the parts that are less notable yet visually dynamic, such as ordinary corner markets or a highway overpass. I work from my own photographs and complete the paintings in my Oakland studio. Most of the works are acrylic on paper. I am interested in the microcosm of the painting, allowing vibrant colors to emerge through thin layers paint. I invite viewers to engage closely with my work, discovering high-intensity hues that peek through and contribute to an unpredictable, dynamic quality in the portrayal of everyday subjects. I am inspired by the rich history of Bay Area painting and admit I rip off many of the great artists who created that history.
Originally from North Carolina, I earned a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design and a MFA from Winthrop University. I relocated to Oakland in 2009 and bring over 20 years of teaching experience to my practice. My studio assistant is an unhelpful yet supportive 65-lb furball named Ferris.
